What is a Water Heater?
A water heater is a device that raises the temperature of water from an initial low stage to a higher state. It can be an electrical device or basic mechanical equipment that needs some heat source. The fuel or source of heat can be a natural or an engineered source, which further forms the basis of water heater classification.
Water Heater Types
If we talk of the water heater types that, in general, are popular for domestic use- It is available in four different types.
- Immersion Water heaters
- Gas Water heater/ Geyser
- Electric Water heater/Geyser
- Solar Water heater/ Geyser
Let us take a brief look on each of these water heater types.
1. Immersion Water heaters
The Immersion water heaters operate electrically; still, they are different from an electric water heating geyser. In short, we can say that they are similar to the heating elements inside an electrical geyser, provided the heating elements are contained in a capillary tube. These water heaters cannot store water inside; instead, they are simple heating rods immersed in water buckets to heat the water. The body materials for the capillary tube comprises of metals, popularly stainless steel. The heating element that lies in the stainless steel capillary tubes is copper made. The alignment between the capillary tube and the heating element is maintained to avoid the capillary tube getting electrified. So, if your immersion rod is imparting electricity when on a test, please get it repaired at a nearby shop. In markets, these water heaters are available in the wattage range of 250 to 2000.
2. Gas Water heater/ Geyser:
In a Gas geyser, the combustion of gas results in the heating of water. These geysers use LPG gas as fuel and are suitable only when the washroom/ kitchen is well ventilated. Please read our Gas geyser article to understand them in detail.
3. Electric Water heater/Geyser
In an Electric geyser, electrical energy gets converted to heat energy. Modern electric geysers are well-engineered and come with safety regulated features. In short, they are the most popular types of Water heaters/geysers in India. Please read our Electric Water heater/ geyser article to understand them in detail. 4. Solar Water heater/ Geyser
A Solar water heater / geyser is the most economical and reliable water heating geyser among all that we have discussed so far. But that’s only when you need hot water in a large volume. Notwithstanding, they are not as popular. Their limited use is due to its requirement of a comparatively large space for installation and a high initial cost. Water, in a Solar geyser/water heater, absorbs the heat from the sunlight and gets heated. They are the best when it comes to serving a large community. Such as community kitchen, Hotels, apartments, etc. Make sure you read our Solar geyser article if interested in knowing more about it.
Water heater working principle
The As-available water heater/ geyser design may vary depending on the purchaser’s requirement, i.e., it may come with a storage tank inside or in the form of a tank-less water heater/geyser; popularly known as ” Instant Geyser.” But, the working principle of these water heaters is more or less the same.
In all the above water heater/geysers, cold water comes in contact with the heating source and gets heated. In some technologies, the cold water enters the water heater/ geyser through an “inlet pipe” and gets heated, while, in some instances, the water heater is submerged in the water container, and thus heat is transferred. The latter method is a common practice in Indian houses where an Immersed rod is dipped to a safe level in a water tub/ bucket. When traveling through the pipe, Hot water being lighter in weight rises above the cold water and is available at the point of use through the “Outlet Pipe.” The outlet pipe locates at the top of any geyser.
Many brands, to enhance the safety features, and make these geysers more user-friendly, provide their geysers with advanced safety-related features such as LED indicators, Auto-Power cut, temperature adjuster, etc.
The importance of a water heater in our daily life cannot be taken lightly. People are using these tools, in one or other form, since evolution. Hence, it will be wise to invest money in a water heater. The selection of a water heater should be made to match the requirement, though.
